My sweet Kona

When my daughter and her boyfriend told us they were going to get a pitbull, I had a mini-freak out. I pictured a vicious dog with a head shaped like a viper and long, sharp teeth waiting to tear out my throat. I envisioned the terror in the eyes of the parents walking by with their babies and toddlers or worse, those who would continually call the police just because I had “one of those dogs.”

Cody and Bree came home with a small bundle of white and brown, with a stubby snout that ended with a huge red-brown nose and curious, yet frightened eyes. The puppy fit in Cody’s hand — she was just old enough to be taken from her mother and was the cutest thing — I was in love. Pit bull or not. How could something so small and adorable be one who would run and dive teeth first into someone’s leg? Setting her in the grass on the lawn, she reminded me of a newborn fawn who was walking for the first time, expect her doe-mother wasn’t there to nudge her on with loving support. She shivered and whined but quickly changed her mood when we gave her a small rubber dog toy.

She grew up to be the sweetest, most obedient dog, truly my best friend. Here are 5 reasons why I give her the title of my #BFF.

1. She loves me unconditionally and she loves to snuggle

Snuggling on the sofa.

2. She greets me when I come home — whether it’s been an hour or a month — as if she’s the happiest dog in the world.

3. She worries when I’m anxious, sad or angry.

Don’t cry Grammie.

4. She loves sports.

Is it time for volleyball? soccer?

5. She is a great listener and she never shares my secrets…
